About Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was born on August 28, 1774 in New York City. Raised in the Episcopalian faith, she experienced a profound transformation after marrying William Seton and having five children. Tragically, her husband passed away, leading her to seek solace and truth in her faith. In 1805, she made the courageous decision to convert to Catholicism, a choice that would shape her life’s work and legacy. In the years that followed, Elizabeth established the first Catholic girls’ school in the United States in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Her commitment to education was unwavering, as she believed that nurturing the mind and spirit of young women was essential for the future of the Church and society. In 1809, she founded the first American congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity, which focused on education and charitable works, setting a precedent for future religious communities. On September 14, 1975, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton became the first person born in what would become the United States to be canonized by the Catholic Church. Her feast day is celebrated on January 4, the anniversary of her death in 1821. Her legacy endures through her dedication to education, her compassionate service, and her unwavering faith.
