About Saint Thomas More
Saint Thomas More was born in 1478 in London, England, into a family of modest means. He was a brilliant scholar, eventually studying at Oxford and becoming a renowned lawyer. His intellect and commitment to justice earned him the position of Lord Chancellor under King Henry VIII. More was known for his unwavering faith and moral integrity, often putting his beliefs above his political career. He famously stated, ‘I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.’ His dedication to his faith led him to a profound conflict with the King when Henry sought to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, and More refused to acknowledge the King’s supremacy over the Church. This refusal ultimately led to his arrest and trial. In 1535, after being imprisoned in the Tower of London, Saint Thomas More was executed for treason. His martyrdom was a testament to his steadfast faith and unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church, and he was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935. Today, he is celebrated as a model of integrity and courage in the face of persecution.
