About Saint Padre Pio
Saint Padre Pio, born Francesco Forgione on 25 May 1887, was an extraordinary Italian friar of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. From a young age, he was deeply devoted to his faith, joining the Capuchins at just fifteen years old. He spent most of his life in the serene monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he became renowned for his profound spirituality and mystical experiences. His life was marked by a deep connection to God and a commitment to serving others, which attracted many to seek his guidance and intercession.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Saint Padre Pio’s life was his experience of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which appeared on his hands and feet. These wounds, visible for most of his life, were a source of both fascination and scrutiny. Despite facing challenges and investigations from the Vatican that temporarily hindered his ministry, his reputation for holiness continued to grow. He was known not only for his stigmata but also for his ability to read souls and perform miraculous healings, drawing countless pilgrims to his side.
After his passing on 23 September 1968, devotion to Saint Padre Pio expanded significantly, especially in the Mezzogiorno region of Italy. He was beatified on 2 May 1999 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 16 June 2002. His relics are now venerated in the sanctuary of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, which has become a major pilgrimage site. His legacy includes the establishment of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital dedicated to alleviating suffering, reflecting his lifelong mission to care for the sick and needy.
