About Saint Joan of Arc
Saint Joan of Arc, born circa 1412, hails from Domrémy in northeast France, where she grew up in a propertied peasant family. Her life took a transformative turn in 1428 when she began to experience divine visions. Guided by the archangel Michael and saints Margaret and Catherine, she felt compelled to assist Charles VII in reclaiming France from English control during the Hundred Years’ War. At the tender age of seventeen, her unwavering faith and determination led her to request an audience with Charles, who recognized her purity and devotion to God. In April 1429, Joan arrived at the besieged city of Orléans, carrying her banner and instilling hope among the demoralized French forces. Her presence was a beacon of faith, and within nine days, the English lifted the siege. Following this remarkable victory, she urged the French army to pursue their enemies vigorously, leading to another significant triumph at Patay. These victories set the stage for Charles’s coronation in Reims, where he became King of France, with Joan proudly by his side. However, her fortunes changed after the coronation. Joan continued to fight for France but faced setbacks in subsequent battles. In 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians and handed over to the English. Despite her bravery and steadfast faith, she was tried for heresy and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. Her martyrdom only solidified her legacy, and she was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XV in 1920, becoming a symbol of courage, faith, and national pride.
