About Saint Maria Goretti
Saint Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy. Growing up in a poor farming family, she exhibited a profound sense of faith from a young age. Her life was marked by resilience and a commitment to her beliefs, even in the face of adversity. At the age of 11, Maria took on significant responsibilities at home, caring for her siblings while her mother worked in the fields. Her devotion to God and her family was evident in her daily life, where she often prayed and sought to live a life of virtue. Her purity became a symbol of strength for many, and she became known for her unwavering faith in God. On July 6, 1902, in a tragic turn of events, Maria was attacked by a young man, Alessandro Serenelli, who sought to violate her. Rather than succumb to his advances, she courageously resisted, proclaiming, “It is a sin!” Her refusal led to a tragic end, as she died from her injuries a day later. Despite her young age, Maria’s final words were filled with forgiveness for her attacker, showcasing her deep faith and love for Christ. Maria was canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 24, 1950, and her feast day is celebrated on July 6. She is recognized as the patron saint of young women, victims of rape, and purity, serving as a beacon of hope for those facing struggles in their lives.
