About Saint Faustina Kowalska
Maria Faustyna Kowalska, born 25 August 1905, was a Polish Catholic religious sister and mystic. Throughout her life, she experienced numerous visions of Jesus Christ, leading her to become known as the ‘secretary’ of Divine Mercy. Her conversations with Jesus were meticulously recorded in her diary, which was later published as The Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska: Divine Mercy in My Soul. This work became pivotal for the spread of the Divine Mercy devotion in the Catholic Church.
At the tender age of 20, Kowalska joined a convent in Warsaw, where her spiritual journey truly began. She was subsequently transferred to Płock and then to Vilnius, where she met Father Michał Sopoćko, her confessor and spiritual director. Under his guidance, she commissioned the first Divine Mercy image based on her vision of Jesus. This painting would later become central to the Divine Mercy celebration, particularly during the Mass that Father Sopoćko celebrated on Low Sunday, now recognized as Divine Mercy Sunday by Pope John Paul II.
On 30 April 2000, the Church canonized Kowalska as a saint, honoring her as the ‘Apostle of Divine Mercy’. Her tomb, located in the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Kraków, continues to attract pilgrims from around the world. Saint Faustina is venerated not only for her profound spirituality but also for her message of hope and mercy, reminding the faithful of God’s unwavering love.
