About Saint Bede the Venerable

Bede the Venerable, born around 672/3, was an English monk and scholar renowned for his significant contributions to theology and history. He spent most of his life at the monastery of St Peter and its sister monastery of St Paul in the Kingdom of Northumbria. From a young age, Bede showed a deep commitment to learning, entering Monkwearmouth at the tender age of seven. His life was marked by a dedication to scholarship and piety, and he survived a devastating plague that struck in 686, which claimed many lives in his community. Bede’s time at Jarrow allowed him to flourish as a scholar, where he produced numerous theological writings and historical texts that remain influential today.

Bede’s most celebrated work, the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, earned him the distinguished title of ‘The Father of English History.’ His writings not only chronicled the history of the English Church but also provided insights into the cultural and social life of the period. Throughout his life, he traveled to various abbeys and monasteries, engaging with prominent figures of his time, including the archbishop of York and King Ceolwulf of Northumbria. His extensive knowledge of the Scriptures and his commitment to the Christian faith made him a respected figure in the Church.

In addition to his historical writings, Bede was a pioneer in the study of computus, the science of calculating calendar dates. He was instrumental in popularizing the Anno Domini system, allowing the Church to date events from the birth of Christ. His dedication to scholarship and clarity in his writings established a foundation for future generations of historians and theologians. Bede the Venerable passed away on 26 May 735, and his contributions continue to resonate within the Catholic Church and beyond.
