About Saint Hubert of Liège
Hubert of Liège (c. 656 – 30 May 727 A.D.) was a prominent Christian figure who became the first bishop of Liège in 708 A.D.. He is celebrated as the patron saint of hunters, mathematicians, opticians, and metalworkers. His life is marked by a fervent dedication to God and the community, earning him the title of the Apostle of the Ardennes. Hubert’s intercession was sought for various ailments, particularly rabies, through the traditional Saint Hubert’s Key until the early 20th century. His story resonates deeply within the Christian tradition, showcasing the power of faith and service.
Throughout the Middle Ages, Hubert was widely venerated, with numerous accounts of his life documented by the Bollandists. These early lives highlight his connection to the legend of the martyr Saint Eustace. Although the earliest biography is sparse in details, it encapsulates the essence of his spiritual journey and dedication. His legacy continues to inspire those who seek to live a life of purpose and devotion.
Hubert passed away on 30 May 727 A.D. in a location referred to as Fura. While later traditions suggested this site was Tervuren, modern scholars believe it is more likely to be Voeren, closer to Liège. His feast day is celebrated on 3 November, a time when many honor his memory and seek his intercession.
