About Saint Andrew the Apostle
Saint Andrew the Apostle was born in Bethsaida around the year 6 AD. He was a fisherman by trade and the brother of Saint Peter. Andrew was one of the first disciples called by Jesus, and he played a crucial role in spreading the teachings of Christ, often referred to as the ‘first-called’ disciple. His dedication to his faith led him to travel extensively, sharing the Gospel in various regions, including Greece and Asia Minor.
Andrew’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to Jesus. He is believed to have been martyred on a diagonal cross in Patras, Greece, around 60 AD. This form of execution is commemorated in the symbol known as the Saint Andrew’s Cross. His feast day, celebrated on November 30, honors his contributions to the early Church and his role as a leader among the apostles.
As the patron saint of Metro Manila and Bel-Air Village, Saint Andrew is revered in various communities. His virtues include faith, humility, and the spirit of evangelization. Many faithful seek his intercession, particularly during challenging times. A well-known quote attributed to him is, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men,’ which illustrates his commitment to bringing others to Christ.
